THE BUSINESS of SPREADING FESTIVAL LOVE
Lorraine Devine is over the moon this morning – and quite rightly so – for the second year running, her creativity and enthusiasm for Festival Cairns has ‘bagged’ first prize in Festival Cairns’ Dress Up Your Business campaign.
Lorraine and her husband John take home the $500 cash prize for their Aplin Street business, Devine Gelato.
“I am just so excited. I love Cairns and I love the festival,” said a delighted Lorraine on hearing the news.
“This year I went all out – over and above last year – with a music display, Japanese display, local produce display and a whole wall dedicated to my love of Cairns. We even introduced a special ice-cream called Festival Fusion – a combination of mango, pineapple, coconut and lemon. It has been so popular our customers have asked for it to be kept on the menu – but I think we will keep it for Festival Cairns,” she said.
Originally from Adelaide, Mr and Mrs Devine have lived in and loved Cairns for the past four years and have just celebrated two years for their ice-cream and gelato business.
And what will she do with her prize money? “I think I will have to give it to my husband to re-paint the walls I have decorated in Festival Cairns. But never fear, it’s a joy to be involved and next year we’re going for a hat trick.”
Lorraine Devine can be contacted during shop hours (midday to 10pm) on tel: 4041 4959.

Following the success of last year’s Dress Up Your Business Campaign, Pacific Toyota once again gave local businesses the chance to dress up their premises and be in the running to win great prizes.
Festival Cairns Operations Manager, Narell Black said the response exceeded all expectation with the “Love Cairns, Love the Environment” theme being embraced by over 30 businesses and as such, is omnipresent throughout the city.
Judging is taking place today and the winners will be announced tomorrow.
To help businesses on their way, every organisation that registered received a starter pack containing five festival icons which include leaping fish, twirling rainbows, green palm fronds, butterflies and love hearts.
The kits were available to all participating businesses, free-of-charge following registration. And there are some great prizes up for grabs:
First Prize: $500 cash plus Birch Carroll and Coyle Movie Package, an advertising package in The Cairns Post and a feature on WIN Local News (weather)

This year on Friday 19 September, Sebel Harbourlights will host an inaugural event showcasing the city’s newest and most exciting restaurant strip on the waterfront overlooking Trinity Inlet.
Harbourlights Wine and Dine Lunch is a newcomer to the official program of Festival Cairns 2008 and one that is destined to set the pace when it comes to lunch time wining and dining. Incorporating a three course lunch by Olanos, Dundees on the Waterfront and Café Lumiere restaurants, guests can expect to feast on the region’s bounty of tropical foods with wines to match by Red + White and The Wine Company.
Speaking on behalf of fellow restaurateurs, the manager of Dundees on the Waterfront, Tina Wort said this event would be one to remember.
“Not only is it an opportunity to relax with friends in a beautiful location, it is the chance to celebrate tropical dining, there will be a fashion parade by Tuba Rose and live entertainment by local musician, Simon Harris and his band, Front Ear.
“The boardwalk in front of our restaurants will be set in a festive line of tables – each with a small gap in between. This allows people to book an entire table to themselves. After a welcome glass of champagne, guests will be invited to sit by our emcee, Laura Pike, before commencing the lunch time menu of an entrée by Olanos, main dish by Dundees on the Waterfront and delicious dessert platter by Café Lumiere,” she said.
Ms Wort added in the week leading up to the event next week, over 100 diners had booked their seat at this event.
Lucky Door Prizes and the chance to win a sleepover dining package at Sebel Harbourlights will be up for grabs to win throughout the afternoon.
Bookings are now being taken. To secure a place – or indeed, an entire table of 10, at this indulgent afternoon of fine fare, contact Tina Wort at Dundees on the Watefront on email: manager@dundees.com.au or tel: 4051 0399.
Tickets are $80 per person or $800 for a table of 10. Tickets include live entertainment, fashion parade, champagne on arrival, entrée, main and dessert as well as a glass of wine matched to each course.
Festival Cairns 2008 will run from Wednesday 27 August to Saturday 20 September, 2008.

WEEK THREE – FESTIVAL CAIRNS
Another bumper weekend – while rainy, didn’t dampen attendance at Carnival on Collins yesterday with some 20,000 in attendance. Reggaetown Festival and Food, Wine and All That Jazz were absolute crackers, as was Sneaky Beats, United – Youth Concert, Stomp the Nard and all the other wonderful events on the calendar.

• In Her Own Words – Majella Smith, Food Wine & All That Jazz,
“Event was very successful with around 400 people more than last year attending – gate numbers just over 1600. We have had lots of positive feedback which always makes you feel good. The kid’s space was a great success with Gherkin the Clown & his face painter friend who gave all the little ones ‘Love Cairns’ love hearts. We had lots of giveaways in that area also – tattoos, glow sticks etc. Paris Texas played some great, easy listening Jazz for the first couple of hours. The Allure girls with their high impact dance were well received. Felix Chen was amazing with his fire dance – loudly applauded – he is so fit & so professional. Hip2Soul got the crowd moving with some great dance music to finish off the night. Steve & Tammy from 4CA did the MC role & they were terrific. The food was well received with interesting & tasty dishes. Annette Jarrett from Leukaumia did well with her ice bucket hire & water sales. The Movenpick Ice Cream cart was fabulous with some very interesting flavours. We had the ATODS alcohol testing people at the gate as people left offering breath tests – I think they may have helped a few people change their minds about driving home. All in all a great event!!
Thanks for your assistance & interest. Look forward to working with you again in the future.” Assistant Event Coordinator at Events NQ, Majella Smith
